Impressive

Letterpress is the oldest mechanized printing method, now enjoying a renewed appreciation by both artisans and paper-lovers alike. A relief-printing technique, raised forms are inked and then literally pressed into the paper. While old-school printers would moan and groan over the "printing for the blind" in vogue today, it is that very impression that sets letterpress apart.

Our shop in Somerville is home to eight antique presses of varying vintage and function, from table top platens mostly used for teaching to the 1300 pound "jobbers" for large scale production, and the darling of the bunch, a lovely little Vandercook #4 proof press. Our inks are hand-mixed and all of our machines are hand-fed. However, we take full advantage of motorized presses and photo-polymer plates, marrying centuries-old techniques with modern technology.

Nearly all of our work is printed on 100% cotton paper. Though we chose it for its pillowy texture and thickness (and the beautiful way it takes an impression), cotton paper has the added benefit of being eco-friendly. No trees were harmed in the creation of this paper!
